Understanding What Happens on the Inside When Tendons Get Over Heated

Nov 2, 2023

The topic of over heating of tendons is well known now amongst the equine community, but do we really understand what this means for our horses?

This short video clearly explains what happens on the inside when proteins (tissue cells) get over heated.  The natural and healthy temperature for tissue cells is 37 degrees, studies show that over 40 degrees denaturisation occurs.  Many will say “my horses are never lame despite using no breathable boots or bandages” but do they know what irreversible damage is happening on the inside?  This video suggests that when cellular structures denature they attract water for example to their structure, could this explain filling legs when in the stable?  Or simply undiagnosed swellings on the legs?  Filling of fluid around joints?  Stiffness?
